KBS2 Promotional Poster Masked Prosecutor 2015 |
Episodes: 16
Starring: Joo Sang-wook, Kim Sun-a
Plot Summary: A man appears in front of Ha Dae-cheol (Joo Sang-wook) and claims to be his father. The man reveals that Dae-cheol was abandoned by his mother in the orphanage and not him. Dae-cheol refuses to believe the man and tries to dismiss him with repudiation each time. However, his father is full of patience and can't be easily sweep away. He further discloses about facts of the past and reason for being deserted by his own mother. More things come to light and Dae-cheol finally decides to reunite and be with his father. Dae-cheol takes in that his father was framed up by friends that led into years of hiding. The father has come back and is seeking revenge through Dae-cheol and therefore wants him to become a prosecutor.
Dae-cheol observes the incurable corruption in the justice system and is set to bring righteousness by running after unscrupulous individuals in the manner he choses to. Having no influential proponent, he feels that being a prosecutor in the society he lives in is not enough to bring justice to the oppressed. To speed up the process in nailing down the wrongdoers, Dae-cheol approaches and coerces them, wearing a mask, to come forward and confess their unlawful deeds.
Dae-cheol has eyes for Yoo Min-hee (Kim Sun-a) with whom he stops seeing after high school. They meet again - Min-hee becomes a police officer while Dae-cheol, a prosecutor. Though they have the same goal, both are unaware of what drives them to be where they are now. Min-hee is a product of rape. The sad fate of her mother was never brought to justice as the only witness in the assault was tortured to prevent exposure of the aggressor. Dae-cheol and Min-hee join hands to nab Jo Sang-taek (Jweon Kang-leol) who is behind with all the illegal activities which includes conspiracy with the elite group of prosecutors. As they investigate, the mystery of their past slowly unfolds. Dae-cheol discovers who his mother is and Min-hee, his father. Circumstances become all the more complicated but their desire to overturn the depraved system remains solid to the ground.
My Thoughts: The writer has a good story to tell however there is a huge opportunity to make it a lot better. It could have been more interesting if execution of the scenes were well thought of. I am leaning towards the neutral as I find the totality of the story line flat and sort of predictable. There is no brilliance in keeping it to a thrill. There is a mystery clouding the plight of the leads therefore my expectation is something that should be unforseeable. It is always exciting for viewers to keep guessing till the story unravel its riddle. I acknowledge the effort in putting in funny representation of some scenes but I think all efforts can only be attributed to Joo Sang-wook and his side kick. I am kind of disappointed with Kim Sun-a's acting - it wasn't really what I expected from her as she did well as Kim Sam-soon of years back. The production could have also made her look appealing and sexier (in a rugged way) even if she plays the role of a police officer with a painful past. They made her look years older than her love interest - I blame the make-up artist for this. It only resulted to bad pairing with JSW. On the romance side of the story - they also could have done a good job on it. The directing was really bad. It's a pity for the cast who worked hard to make things happen (they can only do so much) but, sad to note, even their stature is not enough to carry the entire production all due to poor direction. I can only say that it is only Joo Sang-wook's presence that made me stick around till the end. If not for him, the drama is a total flop! This is just my opinion and I still encourage everyone to watch it. As I have mentioned earlier, the drama has a good story to tell.
