Plot Summary: Hana (Park Shin-hye) was only eight-years old when she lost her father. She is half Japanese and half Korean, born and and raised in rural Japan where many Koreans also live. Her family owns a tourist Hot Springs Inn near the mountains, where they reside. Hana's mother remarries another Korean man, who then brings his teenage son with him, Han Yeon-seo (Lee Wan), to live in Japan. Hana tries to learn the basics of the Korean language as she awaits for the new members of the family's arrival. She welcomes her stepfather and stepbrother warmly to their home. Hana tries to engage herself with little talks to her stepbrother who does not respond to her at all. Yeon-seo had become emotionally withdrawn and mentally fragile since the death of his mother when he was seven-years old.

On their parents' honeymoon, Hana and Yeon-seo are left behind under Hana's paternal aunt's care. The aunt assures to take care of them and manage the inn as well while they are away. However, Hana faces abuse from her aunt, who also plans to sell the inn for her gambling debts and college funds for her own daughter. Despite Hana's pitiful state, she finds comfort with her stepbrother who eventually warms up and opens up to her. Due to Hana's warmth, kindness and patience, Yeon-seo develops infatuation to Hana. He gets jealous to a former school mate turned celebrity, Fujiwara Ryu (Japanese actor, Asahi Uchida), who asks Hana for a date in Tokyo. Despite the cold weather, Yeon-seo follows Hana and ruins her date with Ryu. And for the first time, she hears Yeon-seo speaks and confesses his love for her and that he will protect her forever. Hana knows it's not right to cross the line, but he did, and she, too, can't help falling for her stepbrother. She is afraid to reciprocate and love him back, and so, Hana tries so hard to resist him by deciding to go to Tokyo after graduation. Yeon-seo begs for her not to go, not to leave him. He pours out his sentiments that she is the only person who stays by his side and does not abandon him and as a request, he begs again for her not to leave, but Hana is already decided. Teary-eyed and devastated, Yeon-seo walks out of Hana's life, seemingly for good. Hana blames herself for being a coward and regrets the day she had to reject him.

Two years past, working at Ryu's hotel as one of the hotel maids, Hana, with her best friend, formally learns the Korean language for Yeon-seo. She finds herself always thinking of him, not one moment where she doesn't miss him. There are so many things she wants to tell and ask him and hopes to communicate her thoughts well with her long lost brother when they meet. Hana takes in the offer as a part-time tour guide as she becomes fluent with her father's mother tongue. Meanwhile, Ryu continues to woo Hana and expresses his hope to marry her one day, but Hana does not need anything more from him as her heart faithfully belongs only to Yeon-seo. In one of her tour sessions, Hana thinks she saw Yeon-so. She feels his presence where ever she is. While her feeling is true, Yeon-seo deems critical not to reveal himself. He remains in the shadow watching and protecting Hana from the harsh living reality in Tokyo. Hana continues her search and chases him around whenever he sees the man she thought as her stepbrother. In her heart, she knows it is Yeon-seo no matter how hard he denies. Yeon-seo wants his identity hidden from Hana because of the path he has taken. Yeon-seo is involved in a high profiled organized crime syndicate in Japan and has earned the highest position next to the chief. He is feared and hoisted up to the ranks for killing Shimada, the leader of a rival gang. Yeon-seo, a.k.a Yuki, does not want Hana be identified with him for her own safety and at the same time, he also does not want her to know what has become of him. But with encouragement from Yeon-seo's right hand person, he eventually shows up himself to Hana. Yeon-so wants what's best for Hana, and so, he suppresses his emotions and just be content by being with her even in the briefest of moments. However, their love for each other is too strong to endure. Encouraged with Hana's pure love and devotion, he now yearns to give their love a second chance. However, he feels the need to redeem himself to be worthy of Hana's love.

My Thoughts: I love everything about this drama - the plot, casting, music, cinematography, etc. This is one story that I find myself drowned into the realm of the lead characters and their touching love story. I am actually lost for words right now as I am so overwhelmed and moved by the unfolding events in the drama. I give salute to the stellar performance of Wan Lee! He is just so incredibly good! I will leave the rest of the story to you. You've got to watch this for the details. I simply do not want to spoil your viewing.

My Rating: 10/10
